Childhood memories - Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984) - Doordarshan Serial

Director : Kundan Shah and Manjul Sinha

Main Leads : Shafi Inamdar, Swaroop Sampat, Rakesh Bedi and Statish Shah.

‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’ was the official first ever ‘ sitcom’ of the Indian Television. It was about a couple, a brother-in-law, and the trouble they get into. Usually staid and boring sarkari broadcaster developed a sense of humour on Friday nights. Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, the tale of fun couple Raja and Renu forever quarreling in sweet banter became an instant laugh riot across the nation. The roads would usually be empty in most towns come 8.30 pm. London video stores would await periodically for the copy of the serial’s tape. The box-office openings in cinemas were affected, as actor Jeetendra once complained.

And Shafi Inamdar and Swaroop Sampat became your next-door neighbors, whatever your neighborhood.

Fun facts…..‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’ trivia
* Kishore Kumar sang the incredibly famous title track ‘Yeh Jo Hai, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’.
* Farida Jalal made her comeback in television with the serial.
* The entire serial was shot on a single camera set up.
* The line ‘30 years ka experience hai’ was actually written by Satish Shah himself.
* The first episode that was shot of the serial was actually the first episode on air as well. The
serial had no pilot episodes.

All the episodes ara available in VCD and DVD format over at Shemaroo’s online shopping website.

Childhood memories - Malgudi Days - Doordarshan Serial

Remember this character "swami"

Director : Shankar Nag

Main Leads : Master Manjunath

Every one of us would have grown watching ”Malgudi Days” which was the top serial in the Doordarshan. Malgudi Days was basically a collection of short stories based on the people of a fictitious place, Malgudi. Malgudi is a small village situated on the banks of river Saryu and the whole story revolves around the people living there.

Apart from that, it is one of the greatest works by a great writer R.K. Narayan and who can forget the lyrics of the title song…“Tana na aa tana naanaa aa tana naanaa naaa”…still feel like singing it…..

Childhood memories - Wagle Ki Duniya (1988) - Doordarshan Serial

Wagle Ki Duniya (1988)
Director : Ravi Oja
Main Leads : Bharati Achrekar and Anjaan Srivastav.

‘Wagle Ki Duniya’ was based on charachters created by famous cartoonist R. K. Laxman. It was a marvelous entertainer, which, in some ways, embodied TV’s ubiquitous appeal over the language barrier. The concept was simple and clean, which only focused on the world of the quitessential common man ‘Wagle’. Each episode is a separate story about this middle class family and their day to day, almost mundane, yet exciting life. Anxieties, anticipation, apprehensions, appreciations, appalling incidents, all form a part of their small and simple world. The serial was as much loved in North India as it was in the South.

Childhood memories - Singhasaan Bateeshi - Doordarshan Serial

The story of the throne of Raja Vikramaditya which has 32 statues in the throne. Each statue tells a story. I think it had to do something with another king who wants to sit on the throne but the throne prevent him saying that he is not as worthy as Raja Vikramaditya. Total timepass and lot of moralistic story

Childhood memories - Dada Dadi ki kahaniyan - Doordarshan Serial

Another memorable Doordarshan Serial:
Ashok Kumar and Dina pathak (I think) play dada and dadi respectively.
A story with a moral. Featured story of ghost and had liliput in most of the episode.
Total Children timepass.

Childhood memories - Vikram Aur Betaal- Doordarshan Serial

Another memorable serial Vikram Aur Betaal.
One of the most engaging TV serials of the 1980s.
“Tu bola….aur mein chala…hahaha…hahahah”
“Jawaab de nahi toh mein tere sar ke hazaar tukde kar dunga”

“Vikram vikram vikram betaal betaal betaal”

Remember Satish Shah (Betaal) clinging on Arun Govil's back telling him a story and asking questions at the end.

One of Ramanand Sagar’s best flicks well known for his ever popular Ramayan. The series was about a righteous king ,Vikram who goes in search of a ghost, Betal. Each time he succeeds in trapping him but has to listen to a story on his way back. There is also an impending condition set by Betal that he would accompany Vikram as long as he kept his vow of silence, never uttering a word. These were simple stories which contained a moral, and a question at the end posed by Betal to Vikram. Betal also warned the king that if he knew the answer and failed to answer it, he (Betal) would have his head. The cunning Betal knew that the king was too clever not to know the answer, and each time Vikram fell for the trap followed by the inevitable ...tu bola aur main chala...voooooo.

Childhood memories - Chanakya - Doordarshan Serial

I remember Chanakya for many things. At a time when serials based on ancient India or mythology were mainly costume dramas with a heavy focus on heavy language, where every other sentence referred to honour or the lack of it, here was a serial heavy on political drama. While in school, we learnt in a few short paragraphs (or maybe it was one chapter, I don't remember) about who Chanakya was and what he had done. However, as far as I can recall about what we were taught, we were primarily taught that Chanakya was the writer of the 'Arthashastra, the book on Indian politics and that he was a very clever tactician who brought his favorite king to power.

However, it was the serial that presented things in a slightly different (maybe it was just more detailed) context, labeling Chanakya (known as so because his father was called Chanak) (also known as Kautilya or Vishnugputa) as a person who was inspired by a mission to bring the country together after the invasion of Alexander (or Yakshendra as I remember the name being pronounced in the serial). Just like the Discovery of India series (Bharat ek khoj) brought the history of Indian to everyone, this serial brought the life of times of one of India's greatest thinkers and tactician to the screen.

The serial essentially captures the rise of Chanakya in those time when the Nandas were the rulers (but not very skilful). They had a superb minister, almost to the level of Chanakya himself, called Rakshas. Rakshas was able through his actions to keep the Nandas in power and ensure that no one was able to plan or execute any actions against the Nandas. It was Chanakya, a ruthless person in his mission, who was able to weld together the different states, defeat the Nandan and bring his brave protege, Chandragupta Maurya to power.

There are many examples of his determined nature shown in the serial, but the most famous of them have to be the episode of where when grass hurts his feet, he gets the grass eaten by ants; and probably the most famous one where he makes a solemn vow not to tie his hair till he has got rid of the Nandas.

The serial seemed to be very well-researched, and spent a lot of time and effort to make the entire portrayal including the sets seem authentic. The director and lead actor (Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi) essayed the role in a way that seemed to be very authentic (including the fact that people rode horses bare-back since the saddle was not yet introduced in India). One person who did not come off so well in this serial was Alexander, since the serial also mentions his brutality many times. People will also be surprised to know that the serial was somewhat controversial at its time because of the large use of saffron flags particularly because there was already a lot of feelings about the ongoing rise of the BJP and the Ram Janmabhoomi agitation.

Childhood memories - Ramayan - Doordarshan Serial

This is another childhood serial of Doordarshan. I remember we have Dinero black and white TV set with a wooden sliding shutter. That time TV was young but the impact of Ramayan serial was overwhelming. Viewers across the nation regardless of their religion or age were glued to their or neighbors TV sets.

I remember, that time our neighbors came to our home. The man behind this was creative genius Dr. Ramanand Sagar.

The serial took the epic and presented in a dramatized form. It started coming on Doordarshan Sunday Morning at 9:30 AM from January 1987 to July End 1988. India had never seen something like this serial. It ignited the religious thought in people like nothing that had been seen. Television in India was not so common then, and yet, people found a set somewhere to watch. If a neighbour had a TV, you would go there to watch, or go over to a relative's place. In smaller towns or villages, a single set would have a large number of people watching the single set.

The effect was apparent. Roads would be empty when the serial came, and woe betide a electricity board office if the light would go off; people would gather and raise slogans and threaten. At one time, it set a record for the world's most watched mythological serial. In addition, it opened the floodgates for more mythological and historical serials after that.

The serial took the whole story of the Ramayana from before the birth of the God Rama and all the way till the story of how he re-discovered his sons, Luv and Kush when they had grown up to be child warriors. This was covered through an extension of the serial called 'Uttar Ramayan', created on public demand. The serial brought about a much greater understanding of the epic in a way that no amount of reading would have brought about, and also served to highlight the values and culture embedded in the epic.

The serial also made celebrities of the main actors, who were revered as godly figures (except for Dara Singh (played the role of Hanuman) who was already famous)
* Arun Govil as Ram
* Deepika as Sita
* Sunil Lahri as Lakshman
* Arvind Trivedi as Ravan
* Vijay Arora as Indrajit
* Sameer Rajda as Shatrughna
* Mulraj Rajda as Janak
* Lalita Pawar as Manthara

Childhood memories - Do not spread rumours-Doordarshan Video

This is another Doordarshan old video.
Do you remember.

I think you like it.

Childhood memories - Ek Aur Anek-Doordarshan Video

Remember the good old days of pre-satellite era? The doordarshan dominated era? The logo Changing channels, what is that? We had only one channel, Doordarshan.

Although boring most of the times; I miss some good non-commercial short-films that doordarshan used to telecast. Satellite TV channels these days are too commercialized and can’t afford to waste even a second of air time for something thats good but non-profitable.
